Temptation
When you're really involved in the beauty community, and up to date on the newest releases it's very easy to want all these new items and feel tempted. At the end of the day, beauty companies are releasing new items at such a fast pace that it is really hard to stay on top of all these new releases. I need to keep in mind that I'm buying these products, and I need to prioritize and stay within a reasonable budget. I can not use my blog as an excuse to buy ALL THE THINGS. I would love to, but I'm an adult. Don't buy something because you think everyone else is reviewing it, make sure you really want to try it. I'm not at a point where I will receive PR and that's okay. I don't know if I ever will be. New bloggers shouldn't expect or rely on free products.
Follow Your Own Rules
When it comes to blogging, do your own thing. You don't have to only write product reviews. You can write discussion posts, shop your stash and write about products you already own and love. I love reading wishlists and personal posts. Connect with your audience and have fun. Don't put too much pressure on yourself to do what everyone else is doing. Find your own voice. You do not have to have a DSLR camera, start small and learn as you go. When it comes to photography, I have a lot to learn and I plan to grow and learn at my own pace.
Products
If you're a beauty blogger, chances are you love beauty products. I recommend trying out some monthly subscription boxes that will provide products at a great value to you. Try entering some giveaways and maybe you'll win and have a chance to review those products. Again, shop your stash... When everyone is reviewing the same new products, it's nice to see a post about some products you may have forgotten about. You can also join influencer programs and receive products for free in exchange for a review. I would also recommend shopping at Winners/TJ Maxx stores for discounted makeup.
Brainstorm
Brainstorming and keeping a list of potential blog posts really helps to keep me on budget. It makes me realize that I have so many ideas, I don't need that product right away to have a post written. I can explore my options and purchase that product when I'm ready to get it. In the meantime, I can work on posts that I have brainstormed about. I think keeping lists is really helpful, I don't have to be panicked to write my next post.
These are some tips from me to you. I'm still very new to this community and these tips help me as well.
Loved this post and great tips! It is indeed so tempting to buy so many products when you have a beauty blog, but there is just way too much out there. I love seeing different post as well or from products that no one really talks about. It's great that you get beauty subscription boxes in Canada, i think they're such a great way of trying out new products while still being on a budget x

Temptation is definitely one thing that I struggle with as you see all these new releases and think you have to have them all! I do a lot better now but when I started out blogging I would literally end up spending of fortune on every new release I saw! x
ReplyDeleteThese are some great tips! I think it's good to see reviews that are different too, because that way you are more likely to come across undiscovered gems xx

Some great tips! When you start, it's tempting to buy everything new but there really is no need. I think doing more than reviews makes your stash go further - eg. edits/favourites/disappointing products etc! xx

While I'm not super into beauty products, I like this advice and think it's applicable to all kinds of bloggers, so thanks for sharing! It's easy to see what other bloggers are buying (clothes, book, etc.) and get caught up in that excitement.
ReplyDeleteI agree, I was the same with book blogging. I felt like I had to have new books for weekly haul post.
DeleteCompletely agree! I used to spend almost my whole paycheck on makeup that I will never be able to use up. Now I'm so much more careful with what I buy! :)

Such a great post! I struggle with impulsivity on beauty products but really trying to be better about it. :)

Great tips lady! It is SO HARD not to go buy all the new releases for sure. But I am usually pretty broke (no shame) so I have to be an adult and pay my bills first. LOL.... And btw- I am GLAD u are here and part of the community now. :()
ReplyDeleteLove this post - I often find so many great things I would love to buy, blog about it and then decide I don't really need them after all :-D It would be different for a beauty blogger though :-0

Great tips! I love shopping so it's hard to resist impulse buys! Especially when reading so many blogger's reviews. It makes me want everything! You really have to have self control!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I follow my own rules too. It takes the stress off blogging and I enjoy it more:-) http://www.divadesle.com
ReplyDeleteI loved makeup and skincare before becoming a beauty blogger and my wishlist was always huge, I wanted (and still want) to buy everything I see. I also take notes when reading reviews but I try to buy products I will use and not only for the sake of writing a review on my blog. Great tips!

Jennifer the post is so flipping perfect! I could not possibly agree with your advice any more. It's the most agreeable and similar to my own advice (virtually the same!) I have ever come across! :D I started blogging using my phone to take pictures at they didn't turn out too shabby and then gradually I saved and put things on my Christmas and birthday lists to help me with blogging, like my lights and tripod and photography books. Patience is certainly key but as you have encompassed in your post a true love for what you do and right is the most important of all! :) <3
ReplyDeleteApologies for my poor spelling on a couple of words there I was just so excited to comment on your post, haha :) Xx
DeleteGreat post - I always love a bit of brainstorming as it can really get the creativity flowing!

If you buy everything, you will definitely go broke! LOL I only buy what I'm interested in. Over the years, I know what works for me. So I only buy those things. When something comes out, I really think about if I need it or just want it. Excellent post.
