False Lashes Tips and Tricks |
Have you thought about lashes but don't know where to start? Have you tried them and it didn't work? False lashes have a learning curve, and it took me awhile to figure out how to get them on. I have thin, short lashes that love to stick straight down. I love the look of lashes, and wanted to share some of my tips.
Selecting Lashes
If you're starting out with lashes, my first tip would be to find an affordable multi pack of lashes. This will give you a few pairs to practice with, if you trim one pair too short don't worry about it, you have a few more to try. You can find affordable pairs on Amazon (check reviews) that will give you some breathing room. Also, affordable lashes will let you try out different styles. Walmart has multi packs at an affordable price too. Do not buy a thirty dollar pair of lashes to start. It won't be good...You can also pick up some half lashes that would get you going and practicing. I started with half lashes and moved on to full sets soon after. Half lashes will be glued to the outter part of your lashes.
Glue
It was hard for me to figure out what beauty guru's meant by waiting for the glue to get "tacky." I purchased a squeezy tube of glue, and let me tell you- don't start with a squeeze glue. I find a brush tip lash glue to work much better. It's cleaner and you don't have to put as much on the band. It gets tackier much faster and it is easier to work with. I use both House of Lashes and Kiss glue. The House of Lashes is great because it's tacky almost immediately and you don't have to wait so long. I would be impatient and think I wanted long enough, but it was still too slippery and not dried enough. You have to wait for the glue to almost be dry so that it will stick to your lid and you can finish placing the lash.
Trimming
Trimming your lashes takes practice. My eye is pretty rounded and it's hard to see how much to trim. Start slow and trim from the outter portion, never the inner corner. Trim very little at a time, until it looks right. I use a small pair of nail scissors that I keep for lashes. Also, a nail clipper works well too. I keep a pair specifically for my lashes. Nail Clippers are great for lashes with a thicker band.
Putting them On
Take your time, and get comfortable with a mirror. I prefer to look down in the mirror and bring my lash from above. I stick it to the middle of my eyelid and then use tweezers to stick to to the outter and inner corner. I also put a little extra glue on each end to make sure they stick. If you're not comfortable take them off and try again. Don't get discouraged, there's a learning curve and you will figure it out. Recheck the lashes once they're on and make sure it hasn't popped up. You may need to add a little glue and fix the corners.
**I also found it easier to apply the lashes without mascara on, and then put a small coat of mascara on my bottom lashes once they were on. It lessens how often you can use the lashes and will make cleaning them more lengthy but it really helped me. Again, affordable lashes work well for them technique. It's not such a loss.**
Don't throw them out
Lashes can be cleaned and reused. You can use tweezers to remove the glue from the band and reuse them. Be very careful and hold the lashes while you remove the glue from the band. If you have mascara on the lashes, use makeup remover (Micellar cleaner) to wash them. Let them dry and they should be good to go. I love reusing lashes, they're already trimmed and good to go for next time.
These are my tips, there's definitely a learning curve, but with practice you can do it.
I'm not comfortable with using lashes, I've worn them on my own for Halloween but I used the squeeze glue so of course it fell off. I had my wedding makeup artist put them on me. Great tips, I wanna wear lashes more so I'll keep these in mind!

I'm so bad at putting on false eyelashes! It's something I really need to practice because I'm sure I'll start getting it right eventually.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips Jennifer! I usually have problems sticking them on, but I actually just don't know how to do it haha. So reading that it's best to stick them on in the middle first, then to use tweezers to stick the corners down is a tip I'm going to try!
Do you wear lashes often? I would love to start wearing them on nights out a lot more, but then I also always feel like I look so dolled up and get self conscious, which is a weird thing to feel...
